One of my biggest first-world problems in my life is my daily struggle with being a lefty. From being persecuted as beings of Satan in the past to being a modern minority I can honestly say most of the time being left-handed seems more like a curse than some odd trait, but I'll expand on that later.
First, I'd like to share some lefty facts:
But why list all these statistics when this amazing infographic lists all my grievances for me?
First, I'd like to share some lefty facts:
- Approximately 1 out of every 9 men is left-handed while 1 out of ever 13 women are left-handed
- The word left in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, which means weak or broken. The Oxford English Dictionary defines left-handed as meaning crippled, defective, awkward, clumsy, inapt, characterized by underhanded dealings, ambiguous, doubtful, questionable, ill-omened, inauspicious, and illegitimate.
- The gene LRRTM1 is the gene thought to be associated with left-handedness. The gene is also linked to schizophrenia and other mental illnesses
- On average, lefties live 9 years less than their right-handed peers
- In a world built for right-handed people lefties are: 85% more likely to get into a car accident, 54% more likely to be hurt using tools, 49% more likely to have an accident at home, and 20% more likely to have an accident at work
But why list all these statistics when this amazing infographic lists all my grievances for me?
In reference to this infographic, I can agree with how much lefties do not like spiral notebooks. When simply trying to take notes, it is almost impossible without assuming a comfortable hand position where the rings do not dig into my hand. Expanding upon that, whenever I take notes or especially on exams, I receive this mark on my hand due to the constant smudging of pencil graphite as I write from left to right.
Otherwise, I do not seem to have benefited from all the supposed "positive" things of being a lefty; I do not consider myself to be a genius by any means, am not remarkable at videogames, and am definitely not going to be the President of the United States (4 of the last 7 were!). Left-handed people are thought to be "right-brained." Thus, left-handers should be more in touch with their creative sides while right-handed people are more logical and analytical in the artistic depiction to the left. I wish this were true, but unfortunately I believe I am one of the least artistically creative people I know; I don't even like doodling!
Here I end my tirade about the nuisance I have genetically inherited and bring this question to anyone: What is your opinion of left-handed people and would you ever want to be one and why?
